DE in a Nutshell

Tuesday

Errands: PNC Bank helpful in Bonneville re-titling efforts! Cheap discman.

Afternoon: father returns from Indiana Odyssey, pizza for dinner.

Evening: Land of Talk + Man Man + Fiery Furnaces (i.e. Alex's birthday present).

Review: Canadians Land of Talk took the stage while we were purchasing the other half of Alex's birthday present, an item of merch (Fiery Furnaces t-shirt). They immediately launched into good mid-90s style girl-fronted alt-rock with a 00s post-rock twist; excellent stuff. Strong vocals, well-crafted songs, creative instrumentals. A too-short 30-minute set. Man Man were next & I do not even know where to begin. The beginning: 5 gentlemen in tight white outfits (picture: bike shorts, 80s-style basketball shorts, size-too-small polo shirts), sporting creative facial hair (beard down to chest, Fu Manchu moustache + mullet) take positions, launch immediately into cacophony from which emerge polyrhythms, melody. Drummer tosses sticks in the air, jumps in the air, does tricks with his arms; beardman switches from bass to xylophone to drumsticks-on-10-gallon-pot while singing falsetto; moustache + mullet sings & keyboards & hits a drum from time to time. Whistles & saxophones & trumpets & birthday blowy things emerge and go away; likewise tambourines & unidentifiable instruments. More melody, more polyrhythms, more circus antics, utterly infectious & spectacular. Impossible not to like. Ok, back to sentence format: I will go see Man Man whenever I next have the opportunity; they were amazing. Last up, the headlining Fiery Furnaces, a brother-sister duo renowned for creating an indierock album featuring samples of their grandmother's tenor voice reciting stories. Their live show completely (and, I now know, purposely) abandons the aesthetic of their albums in favor of driving, somewhat straightforward rock'n'roll. Brother Friedberger fiddles with his guitar to produce some weirdness, while Sister Friedberger sings with arresting earnestness and apparent five note range. The non-Friedberger rhythm section (bass and guitar), however, seem to drive the action. Kind of confusing, not sure it worked, but they played some of my favorites (esp. Tropical Iceland), and Sister's practiced-seeming stage awkwardness played well, producing an enjoyable set. Ahh good times.

Rain rain rain. On the way back, Alex treated to Wawa shakes.

Monday

Lunch w/Gpa, hospital 4ever. Split pinochle series in the evening. Rain rain rain.

Sunday

Met up w/Mr. Donavanik for sushi lunch which turned into Charcoal Pit. Mmm mmm. Visited Philadelphia and 303 the cat and Ikea! Rain rain rain.
